What is the Family Resource Center?

The Kentucky Family Resource and Youth Services Centers initiative was established with the passage of the Kentucky Education Reform Act (KERA) of 1990, as amended. The mission of these school based Centers is to enhance students’ abilities to succeed in school by developing and sustaining partnerships that promote: early learning, successful transition into school, academic achievement, well-being, graduation and transition into adult life.

Each Center has a unique blend of program components depending on location, available resources, local need and community input. The goal of the FRYSCs is to meet the needs of all children and their families who reside in the community or neighborhood served by the school in which the center is located.

What does the FRC do?

While each center seeks to help meet the unique needs of the community it serves, the core components of every FRC include:
  • Health and mental health service referrals
  • Education to enhance parenting skills
  • Support and training for day car providers
  • Health and education services for new parents
  • Assistance and referrals for full-time childcare
  • Assistance and referrals for after-school childcare
  • Clothing and food assistance referrals
  • School supplies
  • Emergency and crisis assistance
  • Lending library
  • Parenting resources
  • Referrals to community resources
  • And much more!
  • Volunteering and donations
Simmons and Northside Family Resource Centers happily accept donations from parents, teachers, and community members.

The FRC is always in need of new or very gently used coats and appropriate school apparel (jeans, khakis, sweatshirts, sweatpants, etc.) for boys and girls sizes 5-16. For questions about other items you would like to donate or if you would like to be contacted when a family has an urgent need, just contact the FRC Coordinator.

The Family Resource Center is a non-profit organization and tax receipts are available.
