Wind Chill Guidelines for School Closings

How wind chill factor affects school being delayed or canceled:

During the winter months, several factors come into play that could delay the start of school or cause school to be closed altogether. One such factor is the wind chill on a given day. On particularly cold mornings we continuously monitor the National Weather Service and closely monitor the weather conditions. There are two possible scenarios that come from the National Weather Service: a Wind Chill Advisory and a Wind Chill Warning. The National Weather Service in Louisville, KY defines the two as the following:

  • Wind Chill Advisory: Wind Chills between -10 and -24 degrees and at least a wind of 10 MPH or more.
  • Wind Chill Warning: Wind Chills -25 degrees and below with at least a wind of 10 MPH or more.

When the National Weather Service issues a Wind Chill Warning for Woodford County for the time the school day begins, we will make a decision to close schools.  It is quite likely we will make this type of decision on the morning of the day in question as it is hard to predict what the wind chill will be the night before.  If there is a Wind Chill Advisory for the county, schools will likely be open unless there are operational problems with the bus fleet or mechanical problem in the school buildings.  Buildings and the bus fleet are assessed in the morning prior to school by 6:00 am.

Dress Code Policy Updates and Reminders

Dear Parents and Guardians,

As the temperatures fall, I am reminding families of the Simmons Dress Code and the most recent update to this policy.  A copy of the Dress Code is linked below, but I want to highlight the updates.  Jackets and heavy coats are not allowed on in the building or during class.  While I understand students may be cold in their classrooms, we encourage students to wear a solid white shirt under short sleeve shirts.  Students will be allowed to wear lightweight fleece jackets that are solid colored as long as they have no graphics or patterns on them.  Small logos are acceptable, but no large logos will be permitted.

As always, if you need assistance with uniforms please contact our Family Resource Center at 859-879-4677.

Thank you for your continued support and please let me know if you have questions.

Parent Fall Break Survey

We want to hear from you!

There are numerous implications with both keeping or not keeping fall break in the calendar.  The purpose of this survey is NOT to survey all of the different possible scenarios keeping or eliminating a fall break could potentially mean to the development of the 18-19 calendar recommendation.  Rather, the purpose is to get a general idea to what extent our parents want to keep or not keep fall break in the calendar.  Your individual responses will not be shared with the committee.  Only the overall results will be shared.  If you have already responded via the parent email that was sent, no need to complete survey again as your response has been recorded.  Thank you.

Recently there was an update to our Infinite Campus program, which in turn called for an update to the Infinite Campus App that many of you may use to monitor your students homework assignments and grades.  In the past, the app required an alpha code be entered to access your child's information.  With the update, users are now asked to enter the county and state of the school district their child is enrolled in currently.  This information should only need to entered with the initial download of the app.  However, you may be asked to log in with your username and password when using the app.  If you have any questions, please feel free to e-mail our District Student Information Systems Coordinator, Kathy Kurtz, at kathy.kurtz@woodford.kyschools.us.

Woodford READS - Coming Soon!!

A picture of a stack of three booksLove reading books with your kids?  Woodford READS is for you!

To support the important foundation of early literacy, we are excited to launch Woodford READS (Read, Explore and Discover Success).  Soon after returning from spring break, a common chapter book will be given to every student in grades PK-5.  The book is the student’s to keep.  Mr. Hawkins will kick off the program by reading the first chapter from the book with a group of students from one of our elementary schools.  This will be videotaped and placed on our website.  What we will then ask is for each family to take a few minutes each night and read a chapter from the book together.  For our preschool and early primary students, a parent, another adult or an older sibling can read the chapter to the child.  This helps expand the student’s vocabulary and build important literacy skills.  For our intermediate students, we would like for the child to read to an adult or even to a younger sibling.  While the book might be below the normal reading level of the child, they can practice reading with fluency and expression.   Be sure to click Read More for additional information below.

Simmons Welcomes It's New Principal, Mrs. Tiffany Cook

Dear Simmons Learning Community,

The members of the Site Base Council are excited to announce that Tiffany Cook has been unanimously selected as the next principal of Simmons Elementary.  Tiffany possesses all of the qualities that were expressed in the stakeholder surveys.  In addition, she brings enthusiasm and quality experience to this position.  Below is a brief bio that provides more detail about Tiffany.

Simmons Site Base Council

~I am honored and ecstatic to be named the next principal of Simmons Elementary.  My 11 years as an intermediate teacher at Cassidy Elementary and my 5 years as a Curriculum/PGES Coach , both in Fayette County, have prepared me for this position. I am looking forward to working with the dedicated staff to ensure Simmons students receive a high quality education in a caring and respectful environment. My husband, Rusty, and I live in Lexington and have a 9 year old son, Colin, who is finishing 3rd grade.  As a family, we enjoy traveling to Marshall University football games and watching our son play whatever sport is in season.

~As the daughter of two teachers, one of which was a high school principal, I have grown up as a lifelong learner and continue to learn daily.  Curriculum and Instruction are my passion, and I truly thrive on watching teachers and students grow. I hold myself to high expectations and I firmly believe that every child can achieve at high levels when provided quality education.  The Simmons community deserves nothing less and I am thrilled to lead this team to ensure we reach our fullest potential.

Important Information Regarding Wind Chill Delays and Closings Snowy Fence

How Does the Wind Chill Affect School
Being Delayed or Closed?

During the winter months several factors come into play that could delay the start of school or cause school to be  closed all together.

2014 Winter Choral Showcase

The one event which draws our largest crowds of the year is our Winter Choral Showcase. Mrs. Bowmer, with the help of her colleagues, proudly host two nights of standing room seasonal holiday classics for all to enjoy. For the first time, Orchestra students performed under the direction of Mr. Marsee. Guided by our talented art teacher, Mrs. Baird, the beautiful background decorations were developed and created by our incredible students.

So many parents and grandparents crowd into our little gymnasium to catch a glimpse of their precious one on stage, while we the educators step aside and take pleasure in watching our visitors grin, laugh, sing, tap and applaud in pure holiday delight. We hope you enjoyed your visit and will continue to support our arts programs.  If you were unable to attend, you can access each performance by clicking HERE or visiting our leftlinks "2014 Winter Choral Showcase".

Congratulations to our scholars and to their "energetic" teacher!

2014 Snowflake Feast

One of my favorite customs at Simmons Elementary is our annual Snowflake Feast. Each December, prior to the first snowflake, well typically, we pause school during the lunch hour to lavish our students with first class restaurant service, spirited choral performances, grand snowflake decorations and a catered lunch delivered by the hands of loving parent volunteers.  The highlight of this day is watching our enthusiastic music teacher, Mrs. Bowmer; direct her scholars’ choral efforts while those dining enjoy their meal. Unfortunately, unless you’re designated to volunteer, parents and visitors have never had an opportunity to experience this timeless tradition. We’ve captured every performance for our visitors to view and share with their love ones.

Happy Snowflakes Everyone!

Simmons Welcomes Jennifer Kellogg

Meet the New Counselor

Mrs. Jennifer Kellogg

Mrs. Kellogg is a native of Carter County, Kentucky.  She currently resides in Lexington with her husband and 4th grade son.  Her undergraduate studies were completed at Morehead State University where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in communication. After a few years in the field of journalism, Mrs. Kellogg return to her alma mater where she would earn her second degree, Masters of Arts degree in teaching middle school mathematics and language arts. For the past eight years, Mrs. Kellogg has gained invaluable experiences working and teaching mathematics in schools with similar qualities as Simmons Elementary. These professional assignments and middle school knowledge will serve our students well in preparation for their next level of education.  In May, Mrs. Kellogg completed a Masters of Arts degree in school guidance counseling.

Mrs. Kellogg began her duties on December 1st in our district and here in our building last Monday.  First and foremost, Mrs. Kellogg’s initial goal will be to meet and begin to develop relationships with our student body. Currently, she and Mrs. Dugan are co-teaching classroom guidance lessons during the remainder of our December school days.

Simmons Earns the Energy Star Award

Last Monday, November 24th, Simmons student body assembled to celebrate the distinction of becoming an Energy Star school. This award is provided to schools that use 35 percent less energy and generate 35 percent fewer greenhouse gas emissions than similar buildings across the nation. Mr. Willhite, Director of School Energy manager’s Project, explained this honor is very difficult to attain, considering there are over 80,000 schools in the United States and that Simmons Elementary is one of the top 8,000 schools in the nation with this status. As outlined in the Woodford Sun newspaper, Simmons hosted local, state and national leaders during the event.

Left to Right: Ky Senator Julian Carrol, Energy Director Ron Willhite. US Representative Andy Barr, WCPS Superintendent Scott Hawkins, Ky Representative James Kay, Principal Larry Caudill, WCPS Chief Finance Officer Amy Smith and WCPS Energy Manager Jim McClanahan.  We were thrilled to host these wonderful leaders and wish to express our deepest appreciations for their valuable time and kind words shared on this day.

Special thanks belongs to our district energy manager Mr. Jim McClanahan for all of his hard work, dedication and time devoted to assisting the students and staff of Simmons with earning  this remarkable status. Truly, we couldn't have realized this level of distinction without his leadership and guidance.

Mrs. Bowmer Leads Students At KMEA Choral Festival

This past Friday, November 14th, Simmons Choral Singers joined 33 other elementary schools, including our classmates at Southside Elementary, at Eastern Kentucky University for the 2014 KMEA District 7/11 Choral Festival. Our students perform as part of choir #1 under the direction of Andy Beck and Meg Stohlman.  Mr. Beck is a prolific writer in the educational choral music field with over 500 popular publications currently in print. Our students performed on stage in front of family and friends at 7pm after spending the entire day, leading up to the event in rehearsals from 9am until 6pm.  It was a tough day but well worth the experience.

Grandparent's Day at Simmons

Re: Grandparents Day, September 5th, 2014

We want to express our deepest appreciation for our PTA for their efforts to host our distinguished guest during the Grandparent’s Day luncheon.  Specifically, Tami Overton, for her leadership and efforts to prepare our gymnasium and capture these wonderful moments with her camera.  Of course we are thankful for all of our grandparents who were able to take a moment to join their grandchild for a delicious chicken patty.  On the behalf of our faculty and staff, thank you for making school a top priority for your family.

For the past several years, the Woodford County Board of Education has adopted an instructional calendar based largely on the recommendations of the calendar committee.  The calendar committee consists of employees representing different schools and job classifications as well as students and parents.  The calendar committee will begin its work drafting the 15-16 school year instructional calendar in a few months. One item on the calendar that traditionally is discussed at length is fall break.  For many years it has been a full week break.  However, the committee often gets feedback about adjusting the duration of fall break.  Since it has been quite some time since the opinions of our stakeholders were formally surveyed in great detail, we are requesting your opinion.  In short, we want to know if given a choice, would you like fall break to remain a week or would you prefer fall break be a long weekend (i.e. off on Thursday and Friday before the weekend or off the Friday before and Monday after the weekend).  While your feedback is greatly appreciated, rest assured that individual survey results will not be shared with the committee.  Only the overall totals of those voting for a week and the overall totals of those voting for a long weekend will be shared.   Please visit the following link to complete the survey.  Thanks!  https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/ZRDZMWB

Cupcakes and Treats

August 29, 2014

Re: Cupcake and Treat Procedure Update

Parents and Guardians,

During the August 28, 2014 SBDM meeting, the committee has provided a new level of health and nutrition safeguards for our students regarding school celebrations. If you intend to provide a birthday treat, such as cupcakes, you are now required to provide our office staff a one day notice.  The purpose of this change is to protect the health of our students with diabetes and food allergies. This precaution will provide our health care providers the proper notice necessary to monitor and support our students.  Below is the amended procedure outlined in our student handbook.

Party Invitations and Treats:

During the final 10 minutes of the day, prior to dismissal, “store bought” treats such as cupcakes or cookies are permitted to celebrate a birthday.  In order to prevent medical incidents, a one-day notice will be required prior to allowing the treat to be delivered to the classroom.  If the one-day notice does not occur prior to the delivery of the treat (cupcake) product to school, the product will remain in our front office until the following day. Invitations can be handed out at school only if “all the students” in the classroom receive an invitation.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation with this important change in procedure.

Simmons 2013-14 Teacher of the Year

Congratulations Ms. Eaves for being named the 2013-14 Teacher of the Year.

Once a little bulldog attending Simmons Elementary herself, now Megen Eaves teaches 4th and 5th grade science to others. Mrs. Eaves is a proud Simmons alumni who's passion is finding new experiences for her students to interact with the science curriculum in real, hands on and interesting ways.

"I call my students "my kids" because in our year together they aren't just  kids on my class list, they become a part of  my Heart".

Below are several photos from and introductory lesson on processing and communication skills.  Only using the paper clips provided, teams of students were challenged to "Save Sam" by placing the gummie lifesaver around Sam without touching the gummie worm with their hands.  Some little scientist succeeded, and like all great scientist along the way, some failed.

Congratulations Ms. Eaves!

Welcome Back To School

Simmons Family,

Today was an amazing first day of school. The faculty and staff want to express our deepest appreciation for your efforts to prepare your child(ren) for their first day back.  It truly seemed as if we hadn't left for summer break at all. The entire student body jumped back into our regular routines without missing a single beat.  The teachers were truly impressed with everyone's new uniform dress  attire and  a huge thank you for the supplies needed to begin our school year.  Below are a few images your student may have seen while attending class or walking the halls during their first day.

Welcome back to school everyone!

Parents and Guardians,

Due to changes in the Federal Food Service Program, we no longer have the option to allow ALL students to eat free for the first 30 days of school while we are processing the Free and Reduced (F&R) application forms. Students who attended Woodford County Public Schools and participated in the free or reduced-priced lunch program during the previous school year may continue that status for the first 30 days of the new school year, or until a new lunch application is approved.

Therefore, it is imperative for families intending to apply for the free and reduced lunch program to complete the application form as soon as possible. The application will be made available during our Open House, tomorrow August 7th. The applications will be available in our front office for anyone interested in beginning this process sooner than Open House.

  • If the student paid last year, then they will pay this year unless/until they submit a F&R application.
    • Parents may pre-pay their student’s meals via myschoolbucks.com.
    • Our food service manager, Mrs. Janet Caudill will be on hand during Open House, August 7th, 6:00pm-7:30pm so parents can pre-pay meals.
  • If the student was on F&R last year, they are automatically F&R this year but only for the first 30 days – as their new application is processed.
  • If you are new to our district, you’ll need to complete an application as soon as possible.  Please note: Federal guidelines require all new registering students to pay unless they turn in the application by the first day of school.

Teachers Nearing Their Final Days of School

It’s June 10th and our faculty and staff are still hard at work here at Simmons Elementary!

Tomorrow, June 11th will be our final day together as a faculty for the 2013-14 school year.  Wrapping up this school calendar year has been eventful for us due to the refurbished gymnasium floor and constant fumes from the varnishing placed onto the surface of our gym.  In order to avoid these toxic odors, our faculty moved to our very kind neighbor's meeting facility at Life Adventure Center. We truly appreciate all the hospitality at LAC and will be certain to return for more staff development in the near future.

Variety Show Tryouts Conclude

The Simmons Elementary Student Variety Show tryouts have concluded. Over 90 students have been selected to demonstrate their special talent on June 4th.  The performances are conducted all day while students cheer for each other and our performers wait for their reviews from our guest celebrity judges. Mrs. Bowmer is created for continuing this rich tradition which has been present at Simmons for over 25 years.

Our 5th grade students and teachers watch two performers conduct a difficult gymnastics routine.

Following the routine is Mr. Piercey and Ms. Logan with their very own display of gymnastics. Luckily, Ms. Logan survived this flip.

Good luck to all of our performers!

Club Extravaganza

On Thursday, April 24th, Simmons Elementary celebrated A-Year-Of-Club participation. The amazing Jump Club and talented Glee Club performed in front of a packed house in order to highlight this year’s 21st Century Community Learning Grant after school program’s efforts to engage students beyond the typical school day. Our iFilm club projected their latest anti-bullying video set to the music Brave, by Sara Bareilles, while performed by our Glee Club.  Well over 200+ students are engaged in some activity through the grant program, making the PAWS (Providing Academic and Wellness Services) program a resounding success.

How many clubs do we offer the students at Simmons Elementary? 16 in all! To see the entire list in this year’s program brochure click HERE.

Writing on the Walls

Kentucky's online newspaper, Ky Forward, has posted a feature reviewing our Simmons Writing Committee's efforts to expose students to real-world writing.

Below is an excerpt:

While some people may see “The Writing on the Walls” as a bad omen, at Simmons Elementary School in Versailles, it means preparing students for the future.
Teacher Brittany Ehrlich and the writing team at the Woodford County school created this “community celebration of literacy” to share with students the importance of writing in all facets of life.

Big Band Music

Simmons Elementary played host to a wonderful group of performers, "Young At Heart".  This band averages an age of approximately 75 years young and shows no sign of slowing down. Our students listened for well over an hour to music from the bygone Big Band era.  The sounds of "Count Baise", "Louise Armstrong" and "Duke Ellington" filled our little gymnasium full of wonder and nostalgia from the 1920s.  We want to express our appreciation to Reed Harrod, a Simmons Grandfather, for sharing his group with our students and extend an open invitation to the band to play at Simmons each and every year.

Frankfort Mayor William May was available to substitute for the bands regular drummer.

School Uniform Dress Code 1st Draft and Open Forums

The Uniform Dress Code Committee will conduct two open forums in order to receive addition feedback regarding the development of the dress code policy. If you are interested, please join our committee on April 14th and 28th.  Both meetings will be held in our school library at 6pm. On April 14th, the committee will listen to feedback regarding the initial draft of the policy. Upon receiveing feedback, the committee will make possible revisions and present those on April 28th for additional discussions ahead of the April 30th SBDM committee meeting.  Your assistance in this process is appreciated and valued by our committee members and SBDM leaders.

Board of Education Approves Extending the School Day

At the February 24th board of education meeting, the Woodford County school board approved two recommendations for making up school days missed due to inclement weather.  Those two recommendations were going to school on Memorial Day, which will now occur due to the missed day on Feb. 26th, and adding 30 minutes to the school day for 12 days to make up each additional day.  We have tried to manage the calendar and take advantage of every make-up day possible with the goal of June 6th being the last student day.  With summer camps, summer vacation plans and the many other activities that begin the second week of June, we fully understand that this would not be the best situation for anyone.   With the latest day missed we now are to the point of adding the additional time to the school day.  The plan for the additional 30 minutes would be as follows:

  • Each school would start 5 minutes earlier than the normal start time.
  • The dismissal time would be 25 minutes later than the normal dismissal time.
  • The adjusted times would begin March 13th.
  • March 13th-March 28th would make up one snow day.
  • Bus pick-up times would be 2-3 minutes earlier than normal.
  • The adjusted schedule will continue after spring break if needed.  Details will be provided in follow-up communications.

Should any legislative relief be offered, this will be considered at the March or April board meeting.  We will continue to monitor the session for any updates.

NO SCHOOL - Tuesday, March 4, 2014

Woodford County Public Schools are closed Tuesday, March 4, 2014  due to continued hazardous road conditions.

Parent-Teacher conferences are happening now: How should you prepare and leave your meeting with the answers to the right questions?

There is no shortage of research findings available reporting direct links between a parent’s regular attendance at school and their child’s success at school.  It’s a simple equation (Time + School = Achievement).  An essential part of meaningful parent involvement is attending your child’s scheduled conferences. Parent conferences are extremely important nowadays. Why? Education is changing so rapidly with the infusion of technology, social media, common national standards and high stakes testing. Most of us were educated in traditional settings with the standard schoolhouse equipment- chalkboards, 50lbs of books and a six period day. Today, here at Simmons, your child will experience math, reading, science and social studies without touching a pencil or one of those antiques, ditto paper.  Of course your child will be required to write, but in ways that were completely science fiction during your academic prime. Your 2nd grader will develop a web blog, or answer the question-of-the-day using a “chrome book”, or write simultaneously with a team of students using a shared Google document.

So, what are the right questions for parents to ask whenever meeting with the teacher?  Click here to read more.

Uniform Dress Code Policy

The SBDM committee, our governing body, has charged the Simmons Learning Community to review and develop a Uniform Dress Code policy.   This committee must have representatives from every aspect of our learning community.  We’re asking parents and students to consider serving on this committee in order to represent our primary program and intermediate program.  The committee will need one parent from the k-2 grade level and 3-5 grade level to serve as representatives and contacts for others to voice their opinions. If you are interested and able to serve in this capacity, we would love to have your assistance.  The committee must be structured and develop a schedule of meeting dates by March 19th. The SBDM committee is requesting this adhoc committee meet an April 30th deadline for a 1st draft reading. Please contact our SBDM teacher representative Ms. Sara Thornton, sara.thornton@woodford.kyschools.us, in order to serve with her during the development period.  Once again, we appreciate your support and interest in improving the lives of all of our students.

Pies In The Face

Pies were flying everywhere during the International Book Project pep rally.  In an effort to support the project, students were granted an opportunity to enter votes for their favorite pie in the face teacher.  The fundraising organizer, Mrs. Bowmer electrified the crowd throughout the drawing of student names and grand pie in face smash!  The top vote getter was Mr. Stefanic, followed by Mr. Caudill and Ms. Cambron.  Three students were granted a pie to toss at each staff member.

For more photos from our the International Book Project pep rally, click Here or visit our photo gallery.

In order to be a volunteer (field trips, class parties, etc.), you need to have a current background check.  This means you have completed the AOC background check process this year or you completed it in a previous year and submitted a Volunteer Letter of Intent by the September 15th deadline.  If a volunteer is not current because they did not complete a Volunteer Letter of Intent, they will need to complete the AOC check process again by visiting our Board Office in order to fill out the AOC form and submit a payment of 10 dollars.  As always, new volunteers will not need to pay a fee; only the incidents of lapsed Volunteer Letter of Intent would be responsible for submitting the $10 fee.

Students Bring Characters to Life

5th Grade Wax Museum

Students presented their biographies by displaying a living wax museum. Our students brought their character to life with a small summary of key events and interesting topics to share with visitors. Each student had an opportunity to share their knowledge throughout our school day and then later in the evening to our visiting parents and community.

Our library was filled to capacity as parents tour the living wax museum.
