Welcome to the Woodford Co Preschool

Mission Statement

Woodford County Preschool will develop school readiness and support college/career success for all students.

Vision: The Woodford County Preschool, in partnership with district and families, strives to provide a safe and nurturing environment for the development of the whole child.

We Believe:

Children need experiences that develop resiliency, coping skills, and cooperation with others.

Children need a curriculum that builds literacy and math skills.

Children need opportunties for physical development.

Children need a passion for learning that will encourage them to be successful in school and in life.

Our Program:

Following the implementation of the public preschool program in Kentucky, the Woodford County Early Childhood Center was established initially at Southside Elementary School.  Soon the program outgrew that location and the Early Childhood Center facility was built at its Main Street location in 2002. In following years, growth again increased our enrollment and additional classrooms were opened at Northside and Southside Elementary Schools.

To help fit the needs of all Woodford County students, the Woodford County Early Childhood Center in 2013-14 reintroduced itself as the Woodford County Preschool Program and now has classrooms in all 4 of the Woodford County elementary schools.

The Woodford County Preschool provides half-day (3 hour) preschool classes four days a week. Preschool classes are held Monday-Thursday. Friday is utilized for teacher planning, home visits, parent teacher conferences, and staff training.

The preschool program is provided free for 3 and 4 year old children who have been identified as having a developmental delay. The program is also  provided free for children who will turn 4 years old by August 1 of the current school year and meet income guidelines. Transportation will be provided free to children who have delays or meet income guidelines. Meals will be provided free or at a reduced price to children who qualify under income guidelines. Woodford County also offers a fee-paying option for parents whose children do not meet eligibility for free preschool services, but want their children to have a high quality and well-rounded preschool experience. Fee paying slots are limited in number and assigned on a first-come first served basis after eligible children have been placed.

In addition to the half-day preschool program, Woodford County Schools offers a wrap-around childcare program, called the Preschool Extended Program (PEP), for parents who desire this service. However, space is limited, and spots are filled on a first-come, first-serve basis. If the program is at capacity, a waiting list is maintained.

Important Information Regarding Wind Chill Delays and Closings

How Does the Wind Chill Affect School Being Delayed or Closed?

During the winter months several factors come into play that could delay the start of school or cause school to be  closed all together. One such factor is the wind chill on a given day. On particularly cold mornings we continuously monitor the National Weather Service and closely monitor the weather conditions. There are two possible scenarios that come from the National Weather Service: a Wind Chill Advisory and a Wind Chill Warning. The National Weather Service in Louisville, KY defines the two as the following:

  • Wind Chill Advisory: Wind Chills between -10 and -24 degrees and at least a wind of 10 MPH or more.
  • Wind Chill Warning: Wind Chills -25 degrees and below with at least a wind of 10 MPH or more.

When the National Weather Service issues a Wind Chill Warning for Woodford County for the time the school day begins, we will make a decision to close schools.  It is quite likely we will make this type of decision on the morning of the day in question as it is hard to predict what the wind chill will be the night before.  If there is a Wind Chill Advisory for the county, schools will likely be open unless there are operational problems with the bus fleet or mechanical problem in the school buildings.  Buildings and the bus fleet are assessed in the morning prior to school by 6:00 am.
