Project-Based Learning About Traditions 🎄
This winter weather has us reminiscing on the awesome project-based learning (PBL) and deeper learning that Southside Elementary conducted this past December! ❄️🎄💙 This is a wonderful example of the Portrait of Learner in action! 👏👏
In class, Kindergarten students learned about the many holidays and traditions that take place each year in our world! To bring their learning to LIFE, students participated in the following projects:
⭐️ All Southside Kindergarteners visited Woodford County High School to participate in the holiday tradition of decorating Christmas cookies. They also enjoyed a story about Mr. Grinch and Max. We LOVED seeing our high school students lead our elementary students through this awesome activity. Thank you to our culinary students for baking such yummy cookies for the Kindergarteners!
⭐️ Kindergarteners held a Traditions Museum. Students created displays with photos, drawings, and writing that shared about their families' holiday traditions. What's more, Kindergarten students then presented their displays to each other and to their 5th grade buddies! That's right...we have Kindergarten students participating and excelling in public speaking to older audiences! We are so proud. Thank you to our Kindergarteners and their families for sharing what makes the holiday season special for your family.
⭐️ Kindergarten also established a new tradition! Students created snowman posts (you'll notice them in the photos) that are are each made to be the height of the student! The nose and smiles are also made from their fingerprints. Students now have a new tradition of putting the snowman post in their yard for the winter! We love how students will be able to look at this post for years to come and think, "Look how little I was in Kindergarten!" as they grow and mature.
Not only did students learn valuable information during the traditions unit, but they also made memories and experienced sweet moments at school. Job well done by all of the teachers and adults involved who made this possible for our students! 👏👏
